Prescription Policy

  • We regret that our online pharmacy service provided by Covetrus is no longer available.  In order to better serve our customers, we are currently considering other options for online orders.  During this transition, please contact our office for your pet's medication requests, and our staff will gladly fill them in-house or mail them directly to your door.

  • For prescriptions that are not filled in-house, please refer to the updated prescription policies and guidelines recommended by the FDA

  • Marion Pet Care maintains an in-house pharmacy for several reasons:

    • Convenience to our clients.

    • Many medications used are pet specific and not carried by traditional brick and mortar pharmacies.

    • For accuracy in handling, storing, and dispensing as well as the ability to explain and assist you in how best to administer doses to your pets.

    • Our #1 priority is providing your pet with safe and effective medication.  All products from our in-house pharmacy are FDA regulated and manufacturer guaranteed in the event of adverse reactions or product failures.

    • Because of our relationship with manufacturers and major distributors, we often have access to rebates, free doses, and coupons if available that can help reduce out of pocket costs.

We are aware that there are many other options nowadays for clients to get their prescriptions filled and respect our clients' right to do so.  However, the FDA has warned consumers about the risk of filling prescriptions from unsafe online sources.

PRESCRIPTION  POLICY

  • Due to the amount of time dedicated to trying to process emails and phone requests from multiple pharmacies and the difficulties involved in ensuring accuracy of prescriptions, we are unable to authorize prescriptions over the phone, email, or fax.  This policy exists regardless of whether the pharmacy is internet-based or has a physical location.  Exceptions are for specialized compounding pharmacies and for patients who have existing prescriptions locally that have previous refill authorizations.

  • If you choose to get your pet's prescription elsewhere, we are happy to provide you a written prescription at no charge.  If you are unable to pick up your prescription in person, we can mail it to you for a small postage fee.

  • For your and your pet's protection, we recommend the following:
    • A written prescription will be provided directly to you upon authorization by the doctor that the medication, dose, and monitoring exams and/or lab profile are current in accordance with federal and state prescribing laws.
    • Medications can only be prescribed to patients who have been examined within the last calendar year.  All heartworm preventatives must have an up-to-date heartworm test.
    • Written prescriptions will be kept as part of your pet's medical record.  We recommend that you keep a photocopy at home as well and provide the original written prescription to the pharmacy (either through the mail or in person).  This is to ensure that the prescription can be authenticated in the event of a medication error, failure, or reaction.
    • Please double check your prescription against the physical copy that you have kept at home to ensure that it is filled labeled correctly with the correct directions.  Be sure to check that the pharmacy you use is fully licensed and researched for Board of Pharmacy disciplinary actions.  For boxed veterinary pharmaceuticals (flea/heartworm prevention, etc.), please check to make sure that the product is manufactured and labeled for use in the United States rather than imported from another country (this is illegal).
    • Check the expiration date!  This is especially important for boxed products (example: 6 month supply of heartworm prevention).  Your pet's medication could expire before all doses are given!
    • Follow the link above to the FDA's BeSafeRx site to find information about State Boards of Pharmacy.  Licensing requirements vary from state to state, so you can check if your preferred online pharmacy is licensed by your state board of pharmacy.
